Sanibel Island & Captiva Island, Florida

Sanibel and Captiva Real Estate With a Local Realtor

Sanibel and Captiva are protected barrier islands with strict building rules, no traffic lights, and some of the best shelling in the world.

History and character

Calusa people lived on these islands for centuries before Spanish and Cuban fishermen used them as fishing camps. Homesteaders arrived in the late 1800s to farm and fish.

The Sanibel Lighthouse was lit in 1884 and still stands at the east end. A causeway replaced ferry service in 1963 and brought steady visitors.

Sanibel incorporated in 1974 to control density. The result is a low rise island with more than half its land in conservation, including the J.N. Ding Darling refuge.

Neighborhoods and pockets

  • Gulf front: elevated homes and low rise condos with direct beach access.
  • Near beach and interior: quieter lanes with bike trail access and preserve views.
  • Sanibel River and golf areas: established homes near The Dunes and Beachview.
  • Captiva: smaller, more exclusive, with village dining at Andy Rosse Lane.

Lifestyle here

  • Twenty five miles of shared use bike paths
  • Shelling, kayaking, and back bay fishing
  • Ding Darling wildlife drive and Bailey Tract
  • Island dining without chain restaurants
