History and character

The area started as a small farming settlement called Survey along the Imperial River. Growers shipped produce north by rail in the early 1900s.

The name changed to Bonita Springs when developers promoted the mineral springs and river frontage. Tourists came for fishing camps and the beach.

Incorporation in 1999 gave the city control of its own growth. Since then, golf communities east of I-75 and low rise condos near Bonita Beach Road have expanded steadily.
