Fort Myers, Florida

Fort Myers Real Estate With a Local Realtor

Fort Myers is the anchor of Southwest Florida. It mixes historic riverfront streets, newer gated communities east of I-75, and quick access to the Gulf beaches.

History and character

Fort Myers began as a military fort on the Caloosahatchee River in the 1850s. After the fort closed, cattle ranchers and citrus growers built the first real town along the water.

Thomas Edison bought riverfront land here in 1885 and built a winter estate. Henry Ford followed next door. Their winter seasons put Fort Myers on the national map and led to the royal palms that still line McGregor Boulevard.

The city grew fast after air conditioning and I-75 arrived. Today it blends 1920s bungalows in the Historic District with new construction in Gateway, Daniels Corridor, and the Verandah area.

Neighborhoods and pockets

  • Downtown River District: brick streets, restaurants, art walks, and condos with river views.
  • McGregor corridor: mature oaks, larger lots, and short drives to Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach.
  • South Fort Myers: established golf communities, condos, and easy access to shopping on Daniels and Six Mile.
  • East Fort Myers and Gateway: newer construction, larger floor plans, and more house per dollar.

Lifestyle here

  • Spring training for the Red Sox and Twins
  • Boating from the Caloosahatchee out to the Gulf
  • Weekly farmers markets and a walkable downtown
  • Twenty to forty minutes to Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach, and RSW airport

What I check before you buy in Fort Myers

  • Flood zone and elevation matter block by block. I pull the data before you write an offer.
  • Older homes near the river can be excellent value with the right inspection plan.
  • New construction east of I-75 often wins on insurance cost thanks to newer roofs and impact glass.

Schools serving Fort Myers

Fort Myers addresses feed a mix of Lee County public schools plus private options like Canterbury and Bishop Verot.

School assignment depends on the exact address, and zoning changes. Confirm the zoned schools for any specific home before you make an offer.
